Francis Lui Appointed Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group
Francis Lui Yiu Tung Takes Over Leadership
Francis Lui Yiu Tung has been appointed as Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG), following the passing of his father, Lui Che Woo, on 7 November at the age of 95. The announcement marks a significant transition for the company, with Francis Lui assuming his new role immediately.
The Legacy of Lui Che Woo
Lui Che Woo was instrumental in transforming Macau’s Cotai district into a major hub for gaming and hospitality. GEG operates key resorts in Macau, including Galaxy Macau, Broadway Macau in Cotai, and StarWorld Macau on the peninsula.
Francis Lui, who joined the company in 1979, became Managing Director in 1987 and Vice Chairman in 1997. He also serves as Vice Chair at the Macau Institute for Tourism Studies.
Milestones in Galaxy Entertainment’s Growth
Under Lui Che Woo’s leadership, GEG achieved numerous milestones. In 2005, it became the first integrated casino operator in Macau to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2013, it joined the Hang Seng Index, solidifying its status as a leading player in tourism and entertainment in the region.
Francis Lui has expressed gratitude for his father’s vision and leadership, pledging to continue the company’s mission to lead globally in integrated tourism and leisure while supporting Macau’s economic diversification efforts.
Future Ambitions and Expansion Plans
Galaxy Macau, the world’s fifth-largest casino, boasts a 37,000-square-metre gaming floor, a variety of dining options, and the 14,000-seat Galaxy Arena. Currently, GEG is undertaking Phase 4 of Galaxy Macau’s expansion, adding six new hotels and a 4,000-seat theatre. The $5.1 billion HKD project will increase the complex’s area to over two million square metres, with completion expected in 2027.
Focus on MICE and Entertainment
GEG has embraced the “MICE-E” model, combining meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions with entertainment. This aligns with Macau’s “4+1” strategy to become a global destination for diversified tourism. Francis Lui has affirmed confidence in Macau’s ability to attract international visitors through quality offerings.
Industry expert Tom Chan Pak-lam noted that Francis Lui’s appointment ensures a smooth transition, with no significant strategic shifts anticipated for the company.
