Michigan Breaks Records in Sports Betting and Igaming for November

Michigan operators set new records for igaming and sports betting revenue in November 2023, with igaming gross receipts reaching $226 million, the highest ever recorded.

Record-Breaking Figures Across the Board

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) reported that combined gross receipts from igaming and sports betting reached $284.3 million in November, a 35.9% increase compared to the same month last year and 12.1% higher than October 2023.

After promotional spending was deducted, adjusted gross receipts stood at $240.4 million, marking a 51.9% rise year-on-year and a 15.3% increase from October.

Igaming Shatters Previous Records

Igaming revenue proved a standout, with gross receipts of $226 million surpassing the October 2023 record of $220.7 million by 2.4%. Year-on-year, igaming receipts rose 28.9%, while adjusted igaming revenue reached $203.3 million, a 28.8% increase from November 2022.

BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit emerged as market leaders in igaming, generating $59.7 million in gross receipts and $53.7 million in adjusted receipts. FanDuel and MotorCity Casino followed closely, with $57.0 million in gross receipts and $51.3 million adjusted. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community rounded out the top three.

Online Sports Betting Sets New Handle Record

Michigan’s online sports betting handle hit a record $650.2 million in November, breaking the previous high of $613.4 million set in December 2022. Gross receipts from sports betting rose 72.0% year-on-year to $58.3 million, with adjusted gross receipts surging 264.8% month-on-month to $37.1 million.

FanDuel and MotorCity Casino led the sports betting market with $22.1 million in gross receipts from $245.6 million wagered. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community claimed second place, followed by BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit.

Contributions to Taxes and Communities

Operators paid $44.4 million in total taxes and payments, including $42.5 million in igaming taxes and $1.9 million from sports betting. Tribal operators contributed an additional $5.2 million to governing bodies.

Land-Based Sector Recovers After Strikes

Detroit’s three commercial casinos reported $108.4 million in revenue for November, a 37.0% increase year-on-year. The rise follows disruptions caused by strikes in November 2023. Table games and slots generated $106.4 million, while retail sports betting brought in $1.91 million.

MGM retained the largest market share at 46%, followed by MotorCity with 31% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown with 23%. Combined, the casinos paid $8.6 million in state gaming taxes and $13.2 million to Detroit in wagering taxes and development payments.
